35,000 Recyclables a Day: Glacier Celebrates New AI-Powered Robot at Circular Services Sarasota

With support from Cox Enterprises, Glacier and Circular Services are bringing smarter recycling technology to Florida’s Gulf Coast.

We love any excuse to bust out the oversized scissors. ✂️

On October 8, Glacier joined Circular Services and Cox Enterprises in Sarasota, Florida, to celebrate the launch of a new AI-powered recycling robot. Despite some stormy Florida weather, the occasion called for a ribbon cutting, a behind-the-scenes look at the facility, and a celebration of what happens when innovative technology meets a shared commitment to keeping valuable materials out of landfills.

And there’s plenty to celebrate: Glacier’s newest robot is recovering approximately 35,000 recyclable items every day.

Giving Recyclables a Second Chance

Circular Services’ Sarasota materials recovery facility (MRF) processes residential and commercial recyclables from Sarasota County and surrounding communities, with the capacity to handle up to 50 tons of material per hour.

The facility already uses advanced sorting technologies to separate valuable commodities like paper, plastics, aluminum, and glass. But even at highly sophisticated recycling facilities, recoverable materials can slip through the sorting process and end up on the residue line, headed for the landfill.

That’s where Glacier comes in.

Installed on the facility’s residue line, Glacier’s AI-powered robot provides a final opportunity to recover valuable materials before they’re lost. Using computer vision and machine learning, the system identifies recyclables moving along the conveyor belt and directs its robotic arm to pick targeted items at speeds of up to 60 picks per minute.

These materials can be sold and processed into new products and packaging, keeping valuable resources in circulation rather than sending them to the landfill.

Better Recycling Starts With Better Data

The robot isn’t the only technology Glacier is bringing to Sarasota.

An additional AI-powered scanner installed upstream helps Circular Services understand what’s moving through its waste stream, including valuable recyclables that may be escaping recovery.

Together, these technologies offer two complementary capabilities: the ability to see what is being lost and the ability to do something about it.

For facility operators, that intelligence can reveal opportunities to improve sorting performance, recover additional commodities, and make more informed operational decisions.

It’s all part of Glacier’s mission to make recycling more efficient, more profitable, and ultimately more circular.

A Partnership Built Around Circularity

The Sarasota installation was made possible with support from Cox Enterprises, whose Cox Conserves sustainability program invests in solutions that advance resource conservation and the circular economy.

For Glacier, the project builds on an expanding partnership with Cox Enterprises to deploy AI-powered recycling technology at facilities across the country.

And for Circular Services, it’s another step toward maximizing recovery at an already sophisticated facility.

We’re proud to work with partners who recognize that improving recycling requires more than simply encouraging people to put the right materials in the bin. It requires investing in the infrastructure, technology, and people who make recycling work.

Glacier Makes Headlines on the Gulf Coast

We’re grateful to the local reporters who joined us to see the technology in action and share the story of how Sarasota is investing in smarter recycling.

Check out the coverage (with more being added!):

A huge thank-you to the teams at Circular Services and Cox Enterprises, everyone who helped bring this installation to life, and the Sarasota community for welcoming us.

Here’s to 35,000 more reasons to believe in better recycling, every single day. ♻️
